What to expect on your first visit

When you come in for your first appointment with Dr. Foroohar, be prepared for a pleasant surprise. Our office has a peaceful, calming environment quite unlike that of a typical doctor's office.

“My office is small and controlled,” Dr. Foroohar explains. “It's not like a big medical office with thousands of patients and people calling left and right. You don't have to go through multiple layers of people. Here, you'll get the personal attention you deserve. It's a boutique practice, which is rare and hard to find today.”

Understanding your medical condition

Dr. Foroohar will devote plenty of time to learn about your medical condition, as well as to answer your questions. On the first visit, she will:

  • Take your medical history
  • Perform a neurological exam
  • Review any imaging, including MRIs, CT scans or x-rays, that you have brought with you

Imaging studies help Dr. Foroohar make an accurate diagnosis

“Some patients come in with a workup already,” says Dr. Foroohar. “Others don't have one, and I'll initiate the workup. Usually a workup involves some sort of imaging, which my office staff can arrange for you.

“I don't recommend anything without imaging—this usually involves an MRI, and sometimes x-rays or an EMG,” Dr. Foroohar explains. “I will evaluate your imaging studies to help determine an appropriate treatment plan.”

‘Most of my patients do not need surgery'

Dr. Foroohar takes a conservative treatment approach. “Before I recommend surgery for a herniated disc, for example, I may refer you to a specialist in pain management or physical medicine and rehabilitation,” she says. “And I often prescribe a course of physical therapy.”

If you do need surgery, Dr. Foroohar is skilled in advanced technology such as CyberKnife non-invasive radiosurgery and Brainlab intraoperative image guidance.

“A lot of the patients I do surgery on, I've known for a while,” says Dr. Foroohar. “They know they're going to have surgery, and they've done all the workup, they've gotten another opinion, and when they come in, they're all ready to schedule the surgery. Those patients are usually referrals from my other patients.”

A woman's approach makes a difference

When Dr. Foroohar is asked, “Do you think your approach is different from a male neurosurgeon's?” she says. “Absolutely. I think my male colleagues know that and so do my patients.

“Automatically as a woman, I think I'm more patient and I listen better,” she adds. “I take more time. I think patients leave more satisfied. Even the orthopedic surgeon I operate with says, ‘Your patients really like you.'”
